Trouble with repeatedly failing SharePoint Server preparation tool: Note to Self

We had some trouble with the SharePoint Server preparation tool. It kept running and failing after each server start up. Ultimately, we were bothered enough to find out where startup programs are defined and found that we had to go to c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup to delete it, which fixed the problem.
